GRIEG, Edvard (1843-1907)

Concerto in a for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 18

O'Hora, Judd, Royal Phil. + Lyric Pieces Sel. Tring TRP024
Perahia, Davis, Bavarian + Schumann Pno.Con. CBS 44899
Bishop, Davis, BBC Sym. + Schumann Pno.Con. Philips 412923

The bargain priced Tring CD has a brilliant performance by
O'Hora and superb sound. It is a pleasure to find something so good
in this dark age of "period instruments authentic" garbage.
Perahia's recording stayed in the top of my list for five
years, and is still an option if you could not find the Tring CD.
From 1971 to 1989 the Philips recording was alone in my
list of recommendations for this concert, and remains as a
reference to evaluate other performances. However its sound became
obsolete.

     Holberg Suite, Op. 40

        Karajan, Berlin Phil. + Mozart:Ser.525 DG 400034
        Marriner, ASMF + Sibelius:Karelia,Swan Philips 412727

A delightful piece for string orchestra that shall be
present in any good collection.

     Peer Gynt (Incidental Music)

Popp, Marriner, ASMF, Ambrosian (in German) Angel 47003

There are few good recordings of this work, and no other
sung by Lucia Popp. Her Solveig's Song is sublime. Marriner and his
orchestra are excellent as usual, and EMI recording is among the
best. Indispensable !
